Mental health awareness month: the impact of COVID-19 and our new podcast

“I found that with depression, one of the most important things you can realize is that you’re not alone. You’re not the first to go through it, you’re not gonna be the last to go through it”- Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson

Hello everyone,

We at Soaring Minds hope that you all are doing well during this strange and uncertain time of COVID-19. Along with this unfortunate experience, it is also mental health awareness month; dedicated to breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health, as is the mission behind Soaring Minds. Many people, including celebrities, have bravely come forward about the mental obstacles they have endured, one of them being Michael Phelps. Phelps recently opened up about his mental health struggles of depression and anxiety and how these issues are flaring up during COVID-19. The interplay of COVID-19 and mental health is unprecedented and provides unanticipated obstacles to an already difficult time. We can only imagine how much the nation, including the community of southeastern Wisconsin, has been affected. All of us have had difficulties with the abrupt ending of college, and the transition to online schooling. While we are blessed to be continuing during this pandemic, being separated from close friends, academic opportunities, and extracurricular activities on such short notice has proven to be trying. Moreover, other students continue to face obstacles in regards to travel back to home countries and moving out so quickly. Given all these difficulties, it is important now more than ever to take care of ourselves. With this in mind, we have started a podcast as a means for insightful discussion and reflection about varying aspects of mental health. We encourage everyone —those suffering, those who know others suffering, and those who wish to learn more— to listen to the podcast. The podcast is on Spotify, called Soaring Minds Podcasts, and it is linked below for your listening.

Take care and stay strong.
